DIRECTOR’S THOUGHTS, SEPTEMBER 2022
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR “FREE SPIRIT” CHAPTER, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
46th Annual Old Car Show with Outdoor Flea Market, Sunday, October 30, 2022 Believe it or not, it’s only 1 month away for this annual CHAPTER event!! This event is being held @ Phifer’s Ice Dam, 880 Main Road, Lehighton, Pa 1825. Once again, this event will require much membership help to fill ALL positions needed to host a show. I am now asking for volunteers to contact me to help out in various ways to host this annual event. Next month I will be asking for BOD and Officers to join me on a day to lay out the fields. 1-2 food vendors will be in attendance this year. Your Elected Director, Sally Getz
“Free Spirit” Meeting Minutes – August 2022
No meeting this month, Happy Summer Vacation!! Hope to see you all in September @ the monthly business dinner meeting. Sally sold 1 Buick coverlet to a BCA member from Washington State. He bought 1 last year and is now buying 1 for his friend. Also, Sally sold 2 blankets to a BCA member from South Carolina who also bought a year ago and is buying 2 for his friends! Many thanks to these 2 BCA members.
2022 National Buick Meet, Lisle, Illinois
The Lennys were able to attend the BCA National Meet that was held his past June 21st to June 25th at the Sheraton hotel in Lisle/Naperville, Illinois. This was the first BCA National to be held since 2019, so there was an anticipation for a large turnout, and that was the case. We don’t have registration numbers to offer, but our impression is that there was an excellent number of participants.
There was a very good size outdoor flea market and also a number of indoor flea market vendors. Also, during the Meet period, a number of speakers were scheduled on a variety of topics. Ed attended a seminar presented by Dennis Manner, a retired Buick engine development engineer. Denny spoke on the “History of Buick V-8 Performance Development”. Denny always presents an excellent program, and he is devoted to seeing that this part of Buick’s history is preserved for future Buick devotees and historians.
We both attended a program presented by John Kramen. Anyone familiar with the Mecum Collector Car Auctions will be familiar with John. John is the voice of the auctions as head of a team of very knowledgeable hosts who provide information on each vehicle as it is presented on the auction stand. John provided interesting background on the Mecum Auctions and the family behind them, and his presentation was both informative and entertaining.
We can’t provide numbers for the Buicks on the show field and, unfortunately, after several days of wonderful weather, it rained on show day—all day. We can say that there appeared to be very good attendance and that the host chapter, The Chicagoland Chapter, did an excellent job of providing a wide variety of activities and also did a terrific job of conducting the show.
As usual, the hospitality room, under the direction of Shar and Bruce Kile, was a great place to meet friends and spend some time out of the heat visiting. There was a wide variety of snacks and drinks available.
We are happy that we could attend and see so many friends we have made during our time in the BCA.
Ed and Isabel Lenny
(According to Pete Phillips, “Bugle” editor, 308 Buicks were in attendance on Saturday, show day.)
DAF, Sunday, August 7, 2022
36 BIG, BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS, Original & Restored BUICKS were on the show field this year. All sizes and colors, WOW!! Approximately 23 members were seen throughout the day meandering amongst the BUICKS!
Sally Getz attended selling the chapter Ways-n-Mean items. While some members renewed their dues, 3 new members signed up as part of the “FREE SPIRIT” BUICK family. “Welcome aboard” to the following:
R. Bruce & Mary T. Swayze, Chadds Ford, Pa, 1955 Buick Roadmaster
Donald Williams, Pottstown, Pa, 1964 Buick Rivera
Carmen D’Annunzio, BCA #51637, West Chester, Pa, 1937 Buick 4 Dr Fast Back Special; 1940 Buick 4 Dr Truck Back Special.
Many, many “THANKS” to Chuck Mason, Michael Nester & his wife, Dan Reiniger & Sandy, and Thomas Duckett for arriving at Macungie to direct Buicks to our area. If it weren’t for them, we would have lost our nice shady area under the big tree! Again, “MANY THANKS to you!”
The following are pictures taken by a Buick enthusiast, Mark Fargnoli who attends DAF every year along with his closest friend and his father from New York, enjoy!
