June 2019 Newsletter
Director’s Thoughts, June, 2019
DON”T ASK WHAT THE CHAPTER CAN DO FOR U, but, WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR THE CHAPTER?!
Can you believe, this month, marks the ½ way point of the year? No way!! Yes, way!! Where is the time going? Why it was just Jan/Feb & the home heating system was just so nice & warm. Now we will be so nice & HOT!! Most of us will have our air conditioners on by now, right?
Now that summer vacation is here & the meetings do not reconvene till September, be sure to keep up with the events going on in the “Free Spirit” newsletter! Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives that events which are listed in the monthly newsletter get missed because we do not take the time to READ the NEWSLETTER. Therefore, after a while, we become out of touch w/ the car hobby.
Be sure to attend area car shows to hand out the Lehighton Car Show flyers. Remember, NEW LOCATION!! Same show, different location!! The key here = COMMUNICATION. Communication does not cost us a cent!!
Your Elected Director, Sally Getz
“Free Spirit” Chapter Meeting Minutes, May 7, 2019
Meeting called to order @ 7:30 pm, 16 members & 2 guests were in attendance. Motion to accept April meeting minutes as printed in the May newsletter, Dolores Kennedy, seconded by Isabel Lenny, so carried.
Treasurer’s Report = April 2019 report given, motion to accept, Shirley Schaffer, seconded by Kathleen Duckett, so carried.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Historian – David/ Debbie Brady provided pictures of the Eastwood Co. day tour. David gave a brief synopsis of the things they were observing during the tour. Also, they provided pictures of the 50’s Restaurant w/ a real live Chevy Bel Air that sets on the restaurant roof top!
Dave also spoke of attending a surprise 90th Birthday party for Charlie Arnold! Dave/Debbie Brady, along w/ Louise/Bruce Stephens attended this milestone for Charlie. He is still as sharp as a knife, mind wise! Good for you Charlie!! HAPPY BELATED 90th CHARLIE!!
B. Lehighton Show (formerly Kempton Show) – 4 car registrations received along with 1 outdoor flea market. Flyers are available to all members be handed out @ shows & local businesses.
C. Membership – Dolores reported that it is time to renew your chapter dues. She will be available during the picnic in June to take your dues. 8 members renewed thus far. Thank you!!
D. Newsletter – no report
E. Programs –May= guest speaker is Stephen Harvilla, a Nutrition Health Evangelist. Mr. Harvilla began his career as a Nutritional Health Evangelist w/ a company in 1995. Years later, in 2005, he switched companies & has been w/ “Youngevity” since. His presentation was on “NUTRIENTS” & how our bodies respond to 91 nutrients that the 4 food groups are unable to provide on a daily basis. Did you know that one should not frink carbonated beverages w/ your meals? Carbonated beverages decrease the nutritionsl value of the foods you eat to provide strength for your body! Did you know you should cook with BUTTER & not olive oil? Olive oil contains carcinogens!! It was a very interesting presentation. The key to using “Youngevity” is PREVENTION & SAVING MONEY!!
September or November, guest speaker will be Mr. Joe Iervolino from Bethlehem, Pa. Watch your future newsletters for a more specific month for his presentation. It will be on “Gary Powers’ U-2 Aircraft, the Lockheed SR 71 Blackbird Spy plane.
F. Publicity – no report
G. Technical – no report
H. Ways and Means – no report
RAFFLE: Isabel Lenny was the proud recipient of tonights’ raffle: a BUICK lanyard, different from the chapters Ways n Means item. She gave it to Ed & he took his Haggerty lanyard off 7 applied the BUICK lanyard!!
OLD BUSINESS:
Sally has a co-worker who is looking for a volunteer to use their BUICK in driving her daughter & new husband on their wedding day from point A to point B on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Point A, pick up, = Grand Estonian Hotel, Easton, Pa to point B, drop off, = Cavallos Bistro, < 5 miles from hotel. Time = 4 pm. Much “THANKS” to Eric Hammerstone to volunteer his 1957 BICK ROADMASTER!! THANKS, ERIC!!
Everyone was reminded to “VOTE” for 3 candidates for the National BCA BOD. Everyone was encouraged to read each & everyone’s short biography & then vote. The ballots need to be in by early June!
On that note, several local members have received numerous responses from other BCA members, USA wide, about other members & candidates. Sally encouraged everyone to keep an open mind when voting. The BCA is to be looked at as a “FUN & ENJOYABLE HOBBY.”
NEW BUSINESS: Sally asked the group if members should continue to plan/organize day tours for others to attend & to enjoy a day out. The Eastwood Tour, NO ONE except the Brady’s attended, & they planned it for the chapter! It is alittle disheartening when someone plans/organizes a nice tour for members to enjoy attending, & then NO ONE attends! This will be brought up in front of the membership during the picnic.
Sally dols the 1965 Buick Electra 225 to a gentleman in Sweden! It left Lehighton, Pa 1.5 weeks ago & is on her way to Sweden!
June 2nd = annual Chapter picnic. See article further in the newsletter.
Remember to wear your chapter badge!!
Sally is looking for volunteers again during DAF, August 4th to park BUICKS. Need to be present by 0700!! If there are NO VOLUNTEERS, WE WILL BE OUSTED OUT OF the BEAUTIFUL AREA!! Please contact Sally before July 30th to volunteer. Thank you.
2022 = Chicagoland has submitted a National Buick Meet proposal for 2022. Therefore, the proposed National Buick Meet to be held in Gettysburg is pushed back a year now to June 14-17, 2023. Our chapter will be helping out w/ the Hospitality area & the registration area during this proposed meet.
Sally asked what everyone had planned for the summer, 2 people responded, Missouri & Virginia.
Motion to adjourn = Shirley Schaffer, seconded by Alfred Paul, so carried @ 9:10 pm. Respectfully submitted, substitute, Sally Getz

Sept/Nov Guest Speaker, on Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird
The Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force.[2] It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson was responsible for many of the design’s innovative concepts. During aerial reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile.[3] The shape of the SR-71 was based on the A-12 which was one of the first aircraft to be designed with a reduced radar cross-section.
The SR-71 served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents with none lost to enemy action.[4][5] The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including “Blackbird” and “Habu“.[6] Since 1976, it has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record previously held by the related Lockheed YF-12
Again, be sure to attend this presentation on the SR-71 Spy plane, either the month of Sept or November!! Sally Getz
