November 2018 Newsletter
Director’s Thoughts, NOVEMBER, 2018
What comes to your mind when you think of the month of November? Well, to me, I think of Election Day, not only in our chapter for officers/BOD’s, but for the National Elections Day. I also think of Veterans Day, &, back in the day when the Pilgrims and Indians got together to celebrate a Thanksgiving Feast.
Election Day History
Election Day refers to the day on which general elections in the United States are held. Presidential elections are held every 4 years & the elected president will then be sworn in & take office the following January 20th, a day known as Inauguration Day.
National Elections Day in the United States is always held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
Election Day Facts & Quotes:
- Elections held for federal offices only occur on even-numbered years.
- There is no law in the Constitution or Federal mandate which requires electorates to vote in accordance with the popular vote of their state.
- There are 538 electoral college members. In order to win the vote for President of the United States, a candidate must obtain at least 270 of these votes.
Veterans Day History
Veterans Day seeks to honor and give thanks to all the men & women who have served & are serving in the US Armed Forces. Ceremonies are held across the country @ Veterans Hospitals, cemeteries, & National Monuments. At 11:00 a.m. EST, the Veterans Day National Ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery. At this ceremony the President of the United States, or his assigned ambassador, places a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Veterans Day is observed on November 11th each year.
Veterans Day Facts & Quotes
- The theme for the Veterans Day 2018 poster is The War to End All Wars.
- In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation urging the nation to support the Veterans Day effort in any way possible.
- During World War II, over 16 million men and women served in the military. The war resulted in over 400,000 deaths.
- The War of Global Terrorism, encompassing October 7, 2001 to May 29, 2012, has seen 54,820 casualties of which 6,456 resulted in death.
Thanksgiving Day History
Thanksgiving Day is a celebration of giving thanks for the harvest and blessings of the past year. It is a day of giving thanks to God for his many blessings and expressing our gratitude to friends and family members. It is celebrated in the United States. Thanksgiving Day dates back to the Reformation Period and is accompanied by prayers, special ceremonies, and feasts. Thanksgiving is observed on the fourth Thursday in November each year.
Thanksgiving Day Facts & Quotes
- The first Thanksgiving Day feast was held in 1621 between the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians.
- In 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
- According to the US Government Census, in 2014, 242 million turkeys were raised in the United States.
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the fourth Thursday in November as the official Thanksgiving Day in 1941.
Hope you enjoyed a bit of history as I did. You learn about this in school, & then life goes on, & sometimes we become so intertwined with out own lives that we sometimes forget the importance of things. So it is very nice to be kept “up on things.”
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! Your elected Director, Sally Getz
