Director’s Thoughts, SEPTEMBER, 2018
September is here whether we are ready for it or not. Can you believe it? Our monthly chapter meetings reconvene on Tuesday, September 4th. Be sure to mark your calendars!
One nice idea about it being September, the weather should, yes I said should be not as humid & hot as it has been. Cooler nights will soon be upon us, WHEW!
Do you know when Fall begins? That’s right, Fall starts on September 22, 2018! The main event day of the NorthEast PA All Buick Regional Meet!! Be sure to be ready to volunteer some of your time to help out during this wonderful BUICK event!
Do you know what September 4th is besides the monthly chapter meeting? You guessed it:
Newspaper Carrier Appreciation Day
Date When Celebrated : Newspaper Carrier Day is celebrated on September 4th
International Newspaper Carrier Day is observed on October 10
Newspaper Carrier Day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. The list includes thousands, if not millions, of people. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. At that age, many, but not all, kids moved to restaurant, grocery store and retail type of jobs.
About Newspaper Carrier Day: This day commemorates the hiring of the very first newspaper carrier. Newspaper carriers date back to the early 1800s. On September 10, 1833, 10 year old Barney Flaherty became the first newspaper carrier. Benjamin Day, publisher of The New York Sun, hired Barney Flaherty to sell papers for his penny press. The only job requirement, was that he had to show that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes.
Now, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars. How far, & where would you have to go to get your paper(s) if they did not deliver them using their cars? Isn’t it just amazing how cars intertwine with many things in our daily lives!
About International Newspaper Carrier Day: This day recognizes the importance of newspaper carriers in getting the newspaper each day into the hands of millions of readers. This day honors carriers all over the world, as they deliver the paper diligently in all kinds of weather conditions.
Even President Ronald Reagan got in on the act. On October 6, 1982, he wrote a brief message supporting this day. Have a very happy Newspaper Carrier Day.
Be sure to “Thank your” newspaper carrier on those days stated.

Please introduce yourself when you meet them!!
Sympathy
To those who have not heard, Paul/Shirley Schaffer lost one of their sons last month. As many of us have done in the past, your children have grown up around cars & attending car events. As w/ many of us, Paul/Shirley did the same w/ their children. They all were very active in Das Awkscht Fescht over the years, Ontelaunee Region events, & even our Kempton show in some years using their golf cart to help Paul get around the flea market assigning spaces. Paul/Shirley had been around cars & events for ?? years. Please be there for them & pray for them as they grieve during this tragic time.
Das Awkscht Fescht, 2018
“Thank goodness” we all survived this years DAF! If the hot humid weather did not get to you, the rain certainly did!! This year, as it was last year, John Moore, myself, & w/ the spirit of “Clarence” were vendors of many wonderful car parts in the field of green. However, we rented spaces in the higher elevation in this field of green! “Thank Goodness.” We still had a river run under the trailer & down the row, but at least the trailer did not have to be towed out of the muddy, soggy field. WHEW!! I guess it wouldn’t be DAF if it did not rain & be muddy, right? Just like those many past years during the past fall Hershey meets until everything became asphalt.
Sunday, August 5th, club day, was a beautiful day. 33 BUICKS were on display. Of those 33 BUICKS, 21 belonged to “Free Spirit” members!! How about that!!
I want to “Thank” those gentlemen who attended very early to help park BUICKS! You all know who you were. “MANY THANKS” to each one of you, you came through once again. Plus, everyone else who attended “THANKS” you because everyone loves the prime real estate with the view & the “TREE!!”
This year, the following were the recipients of the 2 awards the “Free Spirit” chapter hands out to 2 BUICKS:
Louis Mandich of Union University, Pa, received the J. C. Taylor Award (pre-war) w/ his 1937 Buick Convertible Sedan.
Richard & Craig Falantano of Bronx, NY, received the BCA Award (post-war) with their 1968 Buick Riviera.
Congrats to these 2 recipients!! Again “Many Thanks” to everyone who attended this event. Sally Getz
The Ultimate Guide on How to Use a Battery Tender
Spending on a battery tender helps you keep your car battery charged and is especially important for people who leave their cars inactive for a long time. The tender will make sure that your car battery is charged at appropriate storage voltage when not active. But, now the question is how to use a battery tender in actual? To help you out, here is a complete guide to using this tender properly for utmost performance.
How to Use a Battery Tender to Properly Charge the Car Battery?
Battery tenders are your ultimate saviors specially in winters when headlights, wipers, and heater are running most of the time. These tenders not only provide continuous voltage to the battery terminals but also make use of spark free technology for security.
As you are aware of what is a battery tender, now let’s explore how to use it suitably.1. Get Acquainted with the
- Precautions First
Don’t forget to take all the essential precautions before employing the battery tender. Wear eye and cloth protection, avoid accessing soap and water, have someone for help if necessary, and ensure you are present in a ventilated area. - Make the Arrangements Appropriately
Place the charger as far from the battery as the cables permit. Now, with the charger ‘OFF’ and the AC plug not linked to the wall channel, place the charger’s DC and AC cables far from the automobile’s moving parts .i.e. fan blades, pulleys, hood, door etc. - Know the Battery Connections Well
Put the battery terminals as Negative (NEG, N, -) and Positive (POS, P, +). Identify which terminal of the battery is connected or grounded to the framework. Now, fix the chargers clip correctly:
In case of positive grounded car, fix the Negative (Black) clip with the Negative (NEG, N, -) position of the battery and Positive (Red) clip with the car chassis or any engine block. In case you want some help, read on some car maintenance tips by experts.
For negative grounded motor vehicle, join the Positive (Red) battery charger clip to the Positive (POS, P, +) clip position. Now, connect the Negative (Black) charger clip to any engine block or the vehicle chassis. - Turn ON the Charger, Now
When everything connected, it’s time to turn on the while plugging it in any electric outlet. Now, note the status of the indicator lights. - Examine the Status of Indication Lights
- Finally, the status of indicator lights here means:
- Red Light Flashing – It shows that the charger has the AC power accessible and the microprocessor is executing fine.
- Red Light on Steady –This indicates that the charger is properly charging the battery.
- Green Light Flashing – With the green light flashing and red light ‘on’, it means that the battery is more than 80% charged and is ready to use.
- Green Light on Steady –It indicates that the charge is complete.
Conclusion
Now, you probably know how to use a battery tender. Don’t forget to read the instructions mentioned on the product. Follow these useful steps the next time you use a battery tender.
Alleghany Region AACA with Swigart Museum, Huntingdon, Pa Meet
August 10-12, 2018 a car meet was hosted by the Alleghany Region & Swigart Museum, Huntingdon, Pa. It was a most beautiful 2-day event!! Friday evening and ice cream social was held @ the museum. You had your choice of flavor of ice cream along w/ many different toppings! (Who said you could only get your choice of toppings @ Shady Maple?) Several participants attended this social. Saturday was the main display day. There were 17 pre-registered participants & approximately 10 day of show participants. There were 2 BUICKS among Fords, Chevrolets, Oldsmobile’s, Pontiacs, Volkswagen’s, Studebakers, & Cadillac’s. A 50/50 drawing was held along w/ basket raffles & door prize giveaways. Sally Getz won a blue Ozark cooler!
A banquet was held Saturday evening @ the Huntingdon Golf Club. The meal & dessert was scrumptious! After the meal, Huntingdon’s bureau Tourism Executive gave a very interesting talk on the history of the man-made Raystown Lake & Dam. To this day, there are small communities that were condemned by the Army Corps of Engineers, of what was once, a long time ago, now 170-180 feet below sea level! It was said that one can see these buildings and bridges by using sonar on the lake!
That was our, & now your history lesson for this month, HahaHaHa!!
