June 2016 Newsletter
Director’s Thoughts, JUNE 2016
Do you recognize these people? Really look into their faces to see if you can identify who they are. In the 1st set(left), row 3, the far right 2 pictures are of the same person, just an old one & a newer one. In the 2nd set (right), 2nd row down, 1st picture, the person to identify is the one right in the front leaning on the handlebars of the bicycle. HAVE FUN!!
I was sent this via e-mail from a fellow member & thought this was very interesting! I was amazed! Maybe you will be, too!! Bring your newsletter along to the picnic to see how many you guessed right!
Your Elected Director, Sally Getz
For all the “Free Spirit” fathers, the following is my wish from me to you:
The Things You Taught Me I Will Always Know
T-the things you taught me I will always know.
H-how could I not? The roots have sunk so deep:
A-all lessons of the heart that I will keep
N-no matter who I am or where I go.
K-kids learn from what their parents are, and so
Y-you are my book of life, the thoughts I reap;
O-only in your arms I quiet sleep;
U-under my words your voice sings soft and slow.
F-from you I learned the rules of right and wrong
A-against which I at times had to rebel,
T-though with regret I carry with me still.
H-how lucky I am to have been loved so well,
E-even as I pushed against your will,
R-relying on a father fair and strong.
“Free Spirit” Chapter Meeting Minutes, May 3, 2016
Director Sally Getz called the meeting to order @ 7:30 pm. There were 20 members & 2 guests present. Our guest speakers are Mr. Wayne Woolever & Mr. James Glancy who are volunteers involved w/ the “Road To Recovery” program through the American Cancer Society. The purpose of this program is to provide transportation to cancer patients to be driven to & from their treatments & Dr. appointments. In 2005, there were 10 volunteer drivers. Today, there are approximately 150 drivers. Each spoke about their experiences w/ driving cancer patients to their appointments. Some patients needed to be driven on a daily basis. While Mr. Woolever is the coordinator of drivers, Mr. Glancy is a driver. The number of patient driving requests each week vary: sometimes it could be 20 requests, or sometimes it could be 50 requests! Over the past years, cars have been donated to this program for drivers to use from many companies in the area. Mack Trucks of Allentown, recently has donated a Volvo to this program. “Hope Lodge” @ Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center provides lodging @ no cost for cancer patients being treated in central PA. Information was provided if anyone wished to volunteer their time to drive.

Buicks at the Ballpark • Tuesday, July 26th, 2016
C’mon out and enjoy America’s favorite past-time! The Lehigh Valley Iron
Pigs have invited the Buick Club of America to their baseball game on Tuesday night, July 26. The Iron Pigs are a AAA level professional minor league team. The game starts at 7:05 pm, and prior to the start of the game the BCA has been invited to bring some Buicks representing various decades and models to do a “parade lap” around the ball field. The first 100 people to sign up for attending the game will receive a FREE ticket to the game. All signing up after that would have a $10.00 per ticket cost, but with that ticket you receive $2.00 complimentary towards your food and beverages at the game!
Arriving early and looking for something to do??? What could be more fun than getting together with Buick friends and having a ballpark hotdog, peanuts and a beverage while watching a baseball game?? To sign up, contact
the Buick Club Office at 614-472-3939 or buickcluboffice@aol.com.
Mack Truck & Lehigh County Historical Museum Tours, April 22, 2016
It was certainly a beautiful day for a tour by 12 “Free Spiriters” & 2 guests! As some met @ the IHOP for breakfast, others joined in @ the parking lot. Within 2 miles from there, the group started their 10:00 am tour @ the Mack Truck Museum, Allentown, Pa. Their personal tour docent gave a lengthy but very interesting history about Mack Truck. Specific time lines were spoken about w/ pictures to match the beginning, the progress & the present day of Mack Trucks. Many types of Mack Trucks were on display to be looked upon: Fire Engines, Tractors, Trucks, & Military vehicles. The featured presentation was Evil Knievel’s restored Tractor Trailer (a Mack tractor, of course) w/ the rocket & a motor bike he once drove! It was bought in Florida (where Evil died) by someone from the mid-west, was restored, & has been on a short tour of display, only to go back to the mid-west @ the end of June.
Lunch was consumed @ the Queen City Diner. From there, the group drove to the Lehigh County Historical Museum, Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pa. There the story of the American Revolution was presented. The tour docent was an extremely delightful historian who has college degrees in History! He just absolutely loves history & truly has a passion to teach everyone about it!
From there, everyone made their safe way home after having had a thoroughly enjoyable day! Many “THANKS” to Kathleen/Thomas Duckett for planning & organizing this day for their “FREE SPIRIT” family!
Congratulations!!
Congratulations to Ed/Isabel Lenny for receiving their Senior Award with their 1990 Buick Reatta during the AACA South Eastern Spring Meet held @ Charlotte, North Carolina on April 9, 2016!
Again, CONGRATULATIONS Ed & Isabel!
Travel Games for Kids
Keeping kids entertained in the car or RV doesn’t have to mean endless DVD’s or other digital pursuits. Try these tips for travel games that don’t require batteries. Keep stickers or treats on hand for prizes!
Camera Scavenger Hunt = Give older kids with digital cameras or cellphone cameras a list of items to photograph before reaching each destination.
Family Travel Journal = Create a family travel journal with a section for each family member. Each person can write & even illustrate their vacation memories as you travel. Provide stickers & other small decorations for kids to add to their pages.
Rolling Scavenger Hunt = Challenge them to find, for example, the 1st animal, a green car or a yellow house & call out as soon as they see them. Make a list of things likely to appear & keep track of who sees them 1st.
Spelling Games = In “Alphabet Soup” the leader starts with a sentence such as “I went to the store & I bought….” & players fill in the blank until they reach the end of the alphabet (an apple, a bear, a car, etc.).
License Plate Game = a family classic!! Create a list of all U. S. states & Canadian provinces. See how many you can collect.
Preprinted Games = For kids old enough to read, keep them busy w/ games you can print from online websites, or create your own to teach kids about where you’re going in the trip.
Prepackaged Games = Card games (a shoe box lid helps younger kids keep cards in their laps); whiteboards/markers for tic-tac-toe & hangman; magnetic board games like chess, checkers, backgammon & bingo; & inexpensive books of brainteasers, crosswords & puzzles.
Red Rose Day
Date When Celebrated : Always June 12th
Red Rose Day is a time to enjoy and appreciate America’s favorite flower…..the red rose. A red rose signifies love. A June setting for Red Rose Day is very appropriate, as this is by far the most popular month for weddings. And, they are in bloom in the gardens across America this month.
In addition to being the most popular cut flower, roses are also the most popular flower in flower beds and around foundation of houses, garages and sheds. They are easy to grow, producing a bounty of sweet scented flowers from June up to the first frost.
Did you know? Each rose color sends a different meaning to the recipient. Make sure you send the right message. Rose colors and their meaning.
Roses – Significance and Meaning of Each Color
Roses come in a wide range of colors. Each different color has a different meaning, or significance. It sends a silent, yet extremely important message from the sender to receiver.
Who originally defined the rose color meanings? We don’t know. But, make sure you are sending the right message when you select roses for someone. Otherwise, he or she will get the wrong message!
Guys, rest assured ….. SHE knows the meaning of every rose color. But, she is only looking for one… the red rose.
Rose Color Meaning
Red – Nothing sends the message of love more clearly, than a red rose. Make that a dozen! The meaning of this rose color is quite clear. Red roses represent love, beauty, passion, courage and respect.
White – Whit is the color of purity and innocence. It also represents silence or secrecy, reverence and humility.
Pink – Appreciation, “Thank you”, grace, perfect happiness, and admiration
Dark Pink – Send roses of this color to show appreciation or gratitude.
Light Pink – admiration, sympathy
Yellow – Joy, gladness, friendship, delight, freedom, the promise of a new beginning.
Orange – Admiration, desire, enthusiasm, fascination
Red and White – Given together, these signify unity.
Red Rosebud – A symbol of purity and loveliness
White Rosebud – Symbolic of girlhood
Cream – Charm, thoughtfulness, graciousness
Thorn less Rose – Signifies “Love at first sight”.
Ten Buicks That Mattered: Milestones in Buick’s Performance Heritage
Here are the cars on Buick’s list, in chronological order:
1909 Buick race car: Winner of the Prest-O-Lite Trophy, the first race held @ Indianapolis two years before the first 500. The 250-mile race was won by Bob Burman, averaging more than 53 mph.
1910 Buick 60 Special: Powered by a 622ci four-cylinder engine, this car went 110 mph, which was hauling butt in 1910.
1938 Buick Century: One of the fastest cars of its day thanks to a straight-eight motor with new “turbulator” (domed) pistons helping to produce 141 hp, pushing the car’s top speed over the century mark.
1954 Buick Wildcat II concept car: There are traces of the Corvette in the Wildcat’s fiberglass body. Buick engineers hopped up the nailhead V-8 in the car with four side-draft carburetors to put out 220 hp.
1963 Buick Special: A midsize car with a tiny, 215ci V-8 that made 200 hp in its final, 1963 version.
1970 Buick GSX: Arguably the best-known Buick muscle car, its 455ci Stage 1 motor produced 360 hp and a locomotive-like 510 lb-ft of peak torque, propelling the car to low-13-second quarters in stock trim.
1976 Buick Century Indianapolis Pace Car: Engineers “reset expectations for Buick performance,” says the company by turbocharging a 3.8L V-6 with 22 psi of boost to make 306 hp.
1984 Buick/March Indy Car: Scott Brayton turned a 204.638-mph lap and a 203.637-mph four-lap average, setting new records for a race car using a production-spec engine block.
1987 Buick GNX: The Grand National carried Buick’s muscle car torch into the 1980s, and the end-of-run GNX was that model’s pinnacle, with 276 hp, all-black paint, and a limited run of 547 units.
2012 Buick Regal GS: The GS nameplate returned to Buick on a four-door sedan (sacrilege!) with a turbocharged four-banger (how could they?!) pumping 270 hp to a manual transmission (hmmm…).
