Director’s Thoughts for November 2013
As I am gathering my thoughts about Hershey, I find it difficult to get started. I am still water logged. While Tuesday (set-up day) & Wednesday were great selling days, that is how miserable Thursday & Friday were with the weather. Having rain for 2 whole days, non-stop, was not nice. It wasn’t nice for the vendor(s) nor the shopper(s). Rain & breezy weather is not a good mixture for when one attends an outdoor event, despite canopies with sides. Thank goodness Saturday turned out to be a rather okay day for both parties involved. Till next year.
As we move towards the end of 2013, let’s mention a few events: Nov. 5, please attend this meeting to cast your vote(s) for your 2014-2015 officers & BOD. Sunday, October 27, Kempton show. Please lend your support. Also, please remember the tours this month: Nov. 3, Clover Hill Vineyard & Winery Tour, & Nov. 14, Stoogeum & Wings of Aviation Freedom Tour. Dec. 3, chapters annual ‘Holiday Gathering’. You won’t want to miss out on these fun & exciting chapter events!
From the Getz family to all of you, ‘HAPPY THANKSGIVING’! Your Elected Director, Sally Getz

Luckily, there are steps you can take to keep you, your car & others safe:
- Slooooowww down & proceed with caution. It’s common sense, but many accidents could be avoided by driving at a school-zone speed, keeping your headlights on & using extra caution when turning or backing up.
- Correctly set your side mirrors. Many drivers could benefit from moving the side mirrors further out. To learn how, check out www.cartalk.com/content/a- voiding-blind-spot-5. Also consider adding blind spot mirrors to side mirrors.
- Embrace Technology. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you mightconsider buying one w/ collision avoidance technology, says Rader. Initially just in luxury cars, these technologies are now in many mainstream family vehicles.
- Rear view cameras display what’s behind your car on a screen.
- Radar & ultrasonic systems beep when they detect an object behind your car. (Some will even automatically apply the brakes.)
- Vehicle cross traffic alert systems use sensors to apply the brakes when a vehicle is approaching.
- Parking assist systems will automatically park your car for you. (No more parallel parking!)
If you’re not in the market for a new car, consider installing a standalone backup camera in your current car. Concerned about damage to your car? Follow these 4 tips:
- If possible, park far away from other cars. Walking is good for you.
- Look for pull-through spots. They spare you from having to back out.
- Be extra careful on gusty days. Strong winds can knock a door or a cart into your car.
- Keep an eye out for stray carts. They can do a number on your vehicle.
If you want to go a step further, try shopping on low-volume days. The Time Use Institute reports that the busiest grocery day & time is Saturday 10 a.m & 4p.m. The least crowded days are Mon. & Tues., especially after 6 p.m.
Of course accidents can still happen even if you’re super cautious & do all your shopping at midnight. That’s why it’s important to have collision insurance, which covers damage your car sustains whether it’s your fault or not. That means you’re covered whether you accidentally crash into a lamppost or if your parked car is majorly dinged. With some extra caution & some extra coverage, you’ll be a lot better off next the time you’re in a parking lot.
- The VULTURE-Like a bird of prey, the Vulture carefully sizes up parking lots & people in search of a spot. Vultures are known for their tense position as they scope out-& stalk-anyone likely to leave. Once you pull out, you can bet they’ll swiftly swoop in to take your abandoned spot.
- The DOUBLE PARKER-clearly defined lines mean nothing to the Double Parker, who insists on taking up more than his fair share of space. You’d think the Double Parker feared damage to his slick new car-yet ironically, Double Parkers’ rides are typically more beat up than beautiful.
- The SPEED DEMON-This parker believes that speed = parking spot. He’s the 1 driving in no-go zones (sidewalks, loading docks, etc.) & zipping by @ unacceptable speeds. Perhaps most obnoxious of all is the Speed Demon’s tendency to casually sail into a spot that someone (usually the Vulture) has been patiently waiting for.
- The REVERSE PARKER-Much to the annoyance of other motorists is the guy/gal who insists on backing into each & every spot. Never mind that it puts other cars & pedestrians in danger. Or that it increases the probability of damaging someone else’s car. Or that there’s a pull-through spot close by. This Reverse Parker..must……back…..in.
- The PARKFECTIONIST-A close cousin of the Vulture, the Parkfectionist is forever on the hunt for a magical, mythical perfect parking spot. He’ll endlessly circle the parking lot in search of 1 that’s ever-so-slightly closer to an entrance. Parkfectionists just don’t seem to mind wasting a ton of time & gas.
