Director’s Thoughts for June 2014
JUNE IS BUSTING OUT ALL OVER!! How many of you just sang that first line? If you didn’t, I bet you will go back & sing it now! Well, it’s true, June is busting out all over. The trees are budding, flowers are blooming & the days are longer. Aside from the obvious signs of summer, when I think of June, I think of Father’s Day. After doing some research, I would like to share some Father’s Day facts with you. Did you know that there are an estimated 70.1 million fathers in the US, with 24.4 million being part of a married-couple family w/ children under the age of 18. That is a lot of Father’s Day presents! Now, on the subject of presents, there are 7,368 men’s clothing stores around the country; a good place to buy dad a tie or shirt. The number of hardware stores are 15,542. This is where you would go to buy ad hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, & other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts. Additionally, there are 6,764 home centers across the country. There are 21,418 sporting goods stores. These stores are good places to purchase traditional gifts for dad, such as fishing rods 7 golf clubs. Now that the gifts are purchased, there are the traditional Father’s Day Bar-BBQ’s. It is estimated that 79.1 million families & friends will participate in an annual Father’s Day BBQ. My own dad passed away several years ago. I can still remember the early summer picnics. Out house was always filled w/ people. In fact, our house was the gathering place for all holidays & special occasions. My dad was the best! I remember him teaching me to ride a 2-wheeler bicycle. It was a green & white Schwinn. My dad named it Fury, after the horse, of course! The first time I took off on my own, down I went! Now I know that letting me brush myself off & get on & try again helped to shape me inti the person I am today. Instead of always correcting my mistakes, he most often let me find my own way, knowing, his heart was breaking. He would hold me if I would cry, or scold me if I broke the rules, but, in the end he would always shine pride & encourage me to succeed. I will never forget my dad & how he raised me. I once asked my son to define Father’s Day. He said it is just like Mother’s Day only you don’t have to spend as much! To all you fathers, enjoy your special day!

“Free Spirit” Meeting Minutes, May 6, 2014
Director Don, called the meeting to order @ 7:32pm. There were 22 members & 1 guest present. Tonight’s guest speaker, Ms. Pam Bechtel, Executive Director of Meals On Wheels of the Lehigh Valley, talked to our group about its history & operation. The 1st Meals On Wheels was served on February 1, 1971. These 1st meals were delivered to 9 families on 3 different routes. The program started because of an elderly couple that was literally starving to death in their home. They were unable to get out for food, or able to prepare their own meals. And so, the program began. Our own Alice & Bill Schaffer have been volunteering their services for many years, Alice since 1976, & Bill since 1999. Between them, they have served well over 10,000 meals. Currently, there are 280 families being served over 33 different routes, with over 6,000,000 meals having been served to date. The main reason this program exists is to provide nutrition to those who can’t provide for themselves.
Motion to accept April meeting minutes as printed in the May newsletter made by Isabel Lenny, seconded by Dolores Kennedy, so carried. Motion to accept treasurer’s report made by Don Atwood, seconded by Kathleen Duckett, so carried.
