Director’s Thoughts for August 2013
Well (that is a deep subject), Das Awkscht Fescht is here!! On your mark, get set, gooooo!! ‘Free Spirit’ members have been working very diligently to make this event a huge success. We have 175 registrants who, if the weather cooperates, will have 341 big, beautiful, and amazing cars, BUICKS, on display during the 3 day event!! There are 65 BUICKS for Friday, 157 BUICKS for Saturday, and 119 BUICKS for Sunday!! WOW!! Amazing work!! Buicks are coming in from CT, DE, MASS, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT, & WV. The oldest Buick coming is a 1910 Runabout from NJ. There will be a wonderful representation of Buick’s from 1910 through 1992. In fact, there will be Buick’s on display for each year of the 1960’s!
Besides Buick’s being on display, there will be many things going on under the tent; raffles, a Chinese auction, continuously running DVD’s on Buick, presentations, meeting new friends and greeting old friends!! Friday night will be hospitality night @ Dave’s Interior Restorations of Emmaus, Saturday a bus tour to America On Wheels of Allentown, and Sunday a peaches n’ cream social under the tent. This is certainly going to be an amazing show!! I hope to see you there!
Next month, September, we will reconvene with the monthly meeting @ Starlite Diner & Lounge, dinner @ 6:00 pm, meeting @ 7:30 pm. A guest speaker will be present.
Don’t forget the Old Kempton Car Show coming up on Sunday, October 27th. Member participation is highly recommended. This is a fun event.
During the month of November, there are 2 tours being organized; Nov 3rd – Clover Hill Winery tour, Nov 14th – The Stoogeum tour. Please keep abreast of these tours by reading your monthly newsletter for further details as the dates become closer.
Enough of my ramblings. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Avoid Summer Breakdowns with Preventative Maintenance
Whether traveling out-of-town or near home, the best way to avoid your vehicle leaving you stranded is with a little preventative maintenance. During the summer driving season, roughly 9.3 million motorists will become stranded. While some may get back on the road, 1,000’s will require a tow for reasons that could have been prevented with proper maintenance.
Two recommendations to decrease you chance of being stranded:
- 1. Have the vehicle serviced regularly
- 2. Identify a quality repair shop & use that facility for all vehicle repairs & maintenance. A trustworthy shop allows a motorist to develop a good working relationship with the service staff & allows the repair technicians to get to know the vehicle & make needed service recommendations in a timely manner.
Easy maintenance & checks for motorists:
- Engine Air Filter – A dirty/clogged/damaged air filter restricts airflow & reduces engine performance. Check filter every 6 months or 7,500 miles.
- Windshield Washer Fluid – maintain level of fluid to help remove contaminants. Check monthly or more often depending on use.
- Tire Pressure – With proper/recommended inflation, tires last longer, help’s with fuel economy & ensures an optimum ride & safety. Check air pressure once a month, when tires are cold, including the spare.
- Tire Tread – worn tires are more prone to hydroplaning on wet surfaces, resulting in a loss of braking power & steering control. Check depth by inserting a quarter upside down into the tire groove with Washington’s head facing outward. The tread should cover part of his head.
- Battery – summer heat breaks down the battery internally & accelerates the rate of corrosion on the terminals. Keep terminals corrosive free.
- Windshield Wiper Blades – blades that are worn, cracked, or rigid with age will not adequately remove rain, grime & other debris that obscures the drivers vision. Check blades with every oil change or whenever they fail to wipe the glass in a single swipe.
